Spanish Grand Prix: Norris Makes the Title Race More Interesting

Lando Norris surely made the drivers’ championship more interesting after winning the Monaco Grand Prix last time out. After winning the said race, he has narrowed the gap between him and Oscar Piastri to only three points, and Norris can leapfrog his Papaya teammate at the Spanish Grand Prix this Sunday.

Piastri finished third on the grid last weekend, with hometown hero Charles Leclerc taking P2. Meanwhile, Max Verstappen remains third in the drivers’ championship with 136 points after finishing P4, putting him 25 points adrift at the top.

With the Papayas dominating again, they have built a sizeable edge in the constructors’ standings. McLaren (319 points) have a 172-point cushion over second-seeded Mercedes (147 points), and the Silver Arrows are in danger of being overtaken by Red Bull (143 points) and Ferrari (142 points).

Piastri reflects on last week’s “untidy” performance

Following a frustrating race in Monaco, Oscar Piastri is keen to respond in style at the Spanish Grand Prix

While Lando Norris had a dream weekend in Monaco, you can’t say the same for McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri. The Australian international described the Monaco Grand Prix as his “most challenging” weekend of the 2025 season thus far.

Piastri had a rough time in the qualifying, tapping the wall on the exit of Rascasse and causing a red flag in FP2 after a hard collision at the tyre wall at Sainte Devote. He eventually started third on the grid, falling behind practice pacesetter Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris. This was only Norris’ second pole position and first since the Australian Grand Prix last March. Despite the mandatory two-stop stipulation in the actual race, Piastri couldn’t get over the hump, as he was unable to overtake Norris and Leclerc, largely due to the Circuit de Monaco’s narrow layout.

“It was a bit more of a struggle than most weekends, probably the most challenging of the year so far,” Piastri said. “Like I’ve said before, you’re going to have tough moments in a championship, not every day is going to be perfect, but as long as you can learn the lessons then that’s what counts – especially at this part of the year.”

Rough few weeks for Mercedes

George Russell believes that Mercedes will regain their groove after a rough couple of weeks. After a strong run of form to open the 2025 campaign, the Silver Arrows have endured tougher outings of late, with Russell slipping from P3 to P7 in the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix while teammate Kimi Antonelli notched a DNF due to a mechanical issue. In the Monaco Grand Prix, Russell finished outside the points for the first time at P11, while Antonelli didn’t do much better at P18.

“It’s obviously been two poor races,” Russell admitted. “We’ve been inside of the top five every single session up until Imola, so we’re hoping to get back into our usual form and have a clean weekend.

“With the changes to the front wing (regulation), there’s a bit of relearning all of the teams will have to take, but I don’t expect it to shake the order up too much,” he added.

History

The Spanish Grand Prix is the oldest race in the Formula 1 calendar, as it celebrated its centenary in 2013. Interrupted by World War 1, the race waited a decade for its second running before becoming a staple of the European calendar. The event has been held at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya until 2026. From 2026 at least until 2035, the race will be run at a new street circuit in the Madrid area.

Lewis Hamilton is tied with Michael Schumacher for the most victories in this event with six, including a five-peat from 2017 to 2021 while driving for Mercedes.

What are the odds?

The Spanish Grand Prix 2025 odds expect Oscar Piastri to get back on track this Sunday with yet another race win. The young Australian is the odds-on favorite to win at 2.50, while Papaya teammate Lando Norris is not far behind at 2.60, and Max Verstappen will likely take the third podium berth at 3.25.

With that said, McLaren should have another productive weekend, as they’re priced at 1.30 odds to be the winning team. Red Bull and Ferrari are pegged at 3.70 and 9.00, while Mercedes are fourth at 12.00.

Isack Hadjar (P6) and Liam Lawson (P8) raised eyebrows with their double points finish for RB in Monaco, but achieving the same outcome in Catalunya is a long shot. Hadjar is priced at 501.00, and Lawson is at 751.00.
