Spain vs Austria
The World Cup 2026 has just got serious; the last 32 and a stage where there is little room for error.
Just ask Germany, one of the tournament favourites, who were shocked by Paraguay on Monday night, despite enjoying 75 per cent possession over 120 minutes before a penalty shoot-out defeat.
So, while Spain will be quietly optimistic of delivering World Cup 2026 highlights in Los Angeles, manager Luis de la Fuente will ensure his players are taking nothing for granted against tricky opponents.
Talking Points
Even more so after his side some serious setbacks in their final group game against now eliminated Uruguay.
After the match, Nico Williams strongly criticised the “completely unnecessary” tackle which left the winger on the sidelines, while Yéremy Pino was also hurt.
The Spanish camp has described the injuries as moderate, a more optimistic outlook after initial concerns both players would miss the rest of the tournament.
Subsequent X-rays have showed Pino has not sustained a fractured collar bone but an acromioclavicular sprain and that Williams has an adductor injury. A statement said the players’ availability would be determined by the rate of recovery.
While Victor Munoz (thigh) may be fit, it’s certain the other two won’t be available to meet an Austrian side who have question marks against two of their main men in veteran forward Marko Arnautovic and centre-back David Alaba.

They picked up knocks during their dramatic six-goal thriller with Algeria but neither man is thought to be suffering from anything more serious than minor knee discomfort.
Austria can’t match the all-round ability of Spain but have grown over the past four years and the collective is greater than the sum of its parts.
Since they appointed Ralf Rangnick in 2022 at a time the team was in the doldrums, the turnaround in fortunes can be credited to his tactical nous, man management skills and high pressing strategy. Austria can be dynamic in the press and creative in the turnaround and their high-energy approach won them many fans in Germany two summers ago. The formation was fluid and Rangnick’s players knew their roles as each game evolved.
Now for the ultimate test.
History
Sixteen matches, nine Spanish successes, four Austria wins and three draws.
Until the 1978 World Cup in Argentina, all their meetings had been friendlies – the very first one coming in 1924 when Spain ran out 2-1 winners in Barcelona, courtesy of goals from Juantegui and Samitier with Hansi Horvath replying for Austria.
It was the Austrians who triumphed in that first-ever competitive encounter, a group match in which Walter Schachner and Hans Krankl were the men on target in a 2-1 victory with Dani finding the net for Spain.
Friendlies and World Cup and European Championship qualifiers aside, that remains their only tournament match-up until now.
You have to go back to 1990, six games ago, to the last time Austria defeated them.
Their most recent meeting was a friendly in 2009 in Vienna when Spain were the reigning European Champions and little over a year away from being crowned world champions.
Vicente del Bosque’s men ran riot that night, recording a 5-1 success with Cesc Fàbregas, David Villa (two), Guiza and Pablo Hernández the goal-getters.
In truth, the match turned when the home team’s Yasin Pehlivan was sent off midway through the first half with Spain leading 2-1.
Austria had taken a seventh-minute lead through Jakob Jantscher.
Betting Tip
It’s Viva Espana all the way with the SBOTOP World Cup 2026 betting odds and I concur.
You can back the European Champions 1X2 @ 1.33 and Asian Handicap -1.75 @ 2.31, in contrast to the outsiders of Austria, on offer 1X2 @ 9.60 and Asian Handicap +1.00 @ 2.66.
The latter are very attractive odds, as is level pegging after 90 minutes with the 1X2 Draw paying out @ 4.89.
Could I see Austria getting to half-time all square before Spain’s overall quality shines through? Well, if so, then a tidy sum awaits with Half Time Full Time Draw Home on offer @ 4.43.
Austria have shown on occasion they can compete with the best but I think this will be one step too far and they are set to exit at the first knockout hurdle, just as they did to Turkey at Euro 2024.
After considering total goal 0-1 @ 3.27, 2-3 @ 2.01, 4-6 @ 3.15 and over 3.00 @ 2.49, I have decided to plump for Over 2.75 goals @ 2.11 as my *** tip.
