Brentford vs Arsenal
Premier League leaders Arsenal are back in action on Thursday when they head to West London to take on in-form Brentford.
Mikel Arteta’s side are still in pole position to win a first league title in 22 years, six points clear at the top of the table, but they have been here before as runners up over the past three seasons, and the next 13 matches will be full of tension. The Gunners need to keep their nerve and Thursday provides big test for the leaders when Keith Andrews’ Brentford aim to make it three wins from three, after seeing off Aston Villa and Newcastle United already this month.
Arsenal have won their last two league games too, beating Leeds United and Sunderland 4-0 and 3-0 but I doubt they will find the Bees quite so friendly. Gunners fans will be nervously scanning the Premier League 2026 updates on Wednesday night as the chief chasers, Manchester City, are at home to Fulham and the gap could be down to three points when they step across the white line 24 hours later.
Talking Points
Don’t just watch Thiago
The Bees’ trip to Tyneside was a tough assignment by any measure and I thought they would struggle to follow up a great win over Aston Villa with another result away to Newcastle. But they did, and the 3-2 victory took Brentford up to seventh in the league table, level on points and goal difference with Liverpool in sixth.
That is some achievement for Andrews whose team was expected to struggle this season. But nobody reckoned on Igor Thiago, injured for the most part of the 2024/25 campaign, coming back so strongly. When Brentford sold both Yoanne Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo in the summer their fans feared the worst; but the 24 year old Brazilian has been sensational this season and, after Vitaly Janelt had equalised an early goal from Magpies defender Sven Botman, Thiago converted the penalty to make it 17 Premier League goals for the campaign and stay just four behind Erling Haaland in the race for the Golden Boot.
But Thiago isn’t the Bees’ only attacking threat. Record signing Dango Ouattara made one goal and scored the late winner for Brentford, while midfield ace Janelt has scored four for the season and forward Kevin Schade is a constant threat with his pace and direct running.
Brentford aren’t slow to get the ball forward, and when they do the Bees have a multiple threat.
Gunners must keep City out of their heads

While Arsenal have plenty on their plate just to beat Brentford, Arteta also has a serious job in hand to keep his players calm, particularly after a dramatic weekend and a late blow to the Gunners. An opener from Martin Zubimendi and a brace from Viktor Gyokores gave Arsenal a comfortable win over the Black Cats; but, on Sunday the Gunners were dealt a psychological hit when Manchester City came back from a one goal deficit away to Liverpool only to win it in injury time and keep the title race well and truly alive.
The Premier League 2026 betting odds still back the Gunners, but Arteta knows his former boss Pep Guardiola is a master in these situations and the Sky Blues are well known to gather momentum in the last third of the campaign. If anything Arsenal has the better squad, but they are yet to get over the line while the Sky Blues have done it time and time again, and it is always easier to chase than to be chased.
History
Arsenal have won eight of their 11 meetings with Brentford, drawing one and losing just once, that stunning 2-0 victory for the Bees on their first match in the Premier League back in 2021.
Arsenal have won the other four of their visits to the Gtech Stadium including a 3-1 win last season; and when the two teams met at the Emirates in December the Gunners won 2-0 with goals from Mikel Merino and Bukayo Saka.
With five wins and a loss from their last six games Arsenal are still in fine form while the Bees have won four and lost two in that time. In the league Brentford have been arguably stronger with three wins and two losses from the last five while the Gunners have won just twice, drawn twice and lost once.
Betting Tip
At SBOTOP odds or 1.67 the Gunners are hot favourites to make it five wins on the bounce at the Gtech, while the Bees can be backed at 4.75 to win or 3.82 to Draw.
A repeat of the 2021 2-0 home win is available at 20.00 and, while that may be a step too far, I can see Brentford frustrating the leaders, and a third big club on the trot at that.
